VELUX Skylights has set an audacious goal as part of our Sustainability Strategy 2030 to become Lifetime Carbon Neutral by 2041. That means we’re taking responsibility for our past and our future carbon emissions.
Called “It’s Our Nature,” the strategy is a roadmap for a decade of action that will transform the way we do business, and the products and solutions we provide.
We’ll capture our historical carbon footprint since our founding in 1941 through forest conservation. We have partnered with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to conserve and/or restore the forest cover of an estimated 200,000 hectares of high biodiversity value tropical forests.
The first two projects are located in Myanmar and Uganda and there will be three more designed to capture approximately 5.6 million tons of carbon equal to our company’s emissions since our founding in 1941 through 2041.
The other part of becoming Lifetime Carbon Neutral is reducing our future carbon emissions from our operations and our value chain.
The decade of action includes:
- Advocating for sustainable buildings and communities through demonstration buildings and homes, student architect competitions, educational forums and research support
- Innovate digital products for sustainable living with a goal of having 30% of our skylights sold with sensor-driven automation that enhances interiors with natural light and fresh air
- Halve our product carbon footprint by reducing material weight, replacing materials with lower carbon footprint and redesigning products
- Green our packaging by making it a single material that’s 100% recyclable and zero plastic
- Ensure diversity and inclusive culture by limiting to 70% our senior management team members with same education, gender, age group and/or nationality
- Increase the number of women in management positions with targets of 40% women in senior management positions and 45% women in all management positions
- Increase employment of people with disabilities to 3% of our total workforce
- Strive for zero accidents by expanding current safety efforts and targets to cover all employees from production through to sales
- Reduce air travel and switch to zero emission cars with targets of 30% air travel reduction and 100% zero emission cars
- Achieve zero waste by reducing non-utilize waste per produced skylight by 50%
- Innovate sustainable solutions with a goal of five sustainable innovations by 2030
- Promote a circular economy by promoting reuse and end-of-life recycling of products
